Video Settings That Cut Bandwidth Costs by Half

Course video is mostly a person talking or a screen recording. Recorded for what it actually is, it delivers the same picture at a fraction of the data.

Default export settings in every recording tool are calibrated for general video — footage where the camera moves, things happen quickly, and detail changes constantly. Course video is almost the opposite: a mostly static frame, a person who moves a little, or a screen where only a cursor and some text change.

Encoding low-motion content with high-motion settings is the most wasteful thing most instructors do, and fixing it is a one-time job that lowers the bill permanently. The bandwidth guide explains why that bill matters; this one covers the settings.

Why low motion changes everything

Compression works by storing one full frame, then storing only what changed in the frames that follow. The less that changes, the less data is needed.

A lecture is nearly ideal for this. The background does not move. The speaker moves a little. A screen recording of slides can be identical for seconds at a time.

The problem is that your recorder does not know what it is looking at. It applies a setting chosen for footage of a football match. You are the one who tells it otherwise — and if you do not, you pay for headroom you never use.

Frame rate: change this first

Record at 30 frames per second. If you are recording static slides, lower is fine.

Sixty roughly doubles the data for content that gains nothing from it. Nothing in a lecture moves fast enough to benefit; that setting exists for sport and gaming, which is why many screen recorders default to it.

This is a single dropdown, and it is usually the largest saving available.

Quality setting: lower than you think

Most recorders offer a quality or bitrate setting, and the default is generous because it has to cover fast-moving footage. For a talking head or a slide deck you can go considerably lower without a student noticing.

The one exception is screen recordings with small text. Text is where over-compression becomes obvious — soft edges on code or interface labels genuinely make a lesson harder to follow, while a slightly soft face costs nothing. Give those lessons a little more room.

Resolution: record high, deliver adaptively

Record at full HD. Always. Storage is cheap and you cannot add detail back later.

Delivery is a separate decision, and a good platform handles it for you by offering several quality levels and letting each student's player pick based on their screen and connection. What matters is the default: a player that starts everyone at the top rung is spending your maximum on students watching in a five-inch window where they genuinely cannot tell the difference.

There is no case for 4K in a course. It is several times the data, most students watch on phones, and nobody has ever learned faster from a sharper video.

Audio: small file, large annoyance

Audio is a fraction of the total, but it is where students actually notice problems. Quiet, inconsistent or distorted audio makes a course feel cheap far faster than soft video does.

  • Use mono, not stereo. One person talking into one microphone is a mono source. Stereo doubles the data to store the same thing twice.
  • A modest bitrate is plenty for speech. Audio is not where your bill is.
  • Normalise levels across lessons, so students are not reaching for the volume between videos.

Spend your attention here on consistency, not on file size.

What not to do

  • Do not re-encode an already compressed file repeatedly. Every pass loses quality permanently. Keep the original recording and export from it.
  • Do not save data by dropping resolution alone. Falling to a low resolution makes text unreadable, while lowering the quality setting at full HD usually does not.
  • Do not chase the smallest possible file. Past a point the picture starts to look cheap, which is a worse outcome than a bandwidth bill.
  • Do not pick an exotic format yourself. Modern formats are smaller, but not everything can play them. Let your platform decide what to serve to which device — that is its job, not yours.

The one-time job

Take your longest lesson. Export it twice — once with your current settings, once with the settings above. Watch both on a phone, at the size a student will.

If you cannot tell them apart, re-export the library and stop paying for the difference.
